Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman officially accepted the Republican nomination for New York governor on Wednesday (February 11), setting the stage for a challenging race against incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the November election.

During his acceptance speech at the state GOP's three-day convention on Long Island, Blakeman painted a stark picture of New York under Hochul's leadership. "Kathy Hochul has put our state in crisis," Blakeman declared. "Taxes are souring. Electric bills and insurance premiums keep climbing out of control. Crime is rising. Businesses are leaving the state in record numbers. Families and seniors are being priced out of their homes," he stated in his remarks.

Blakeman will be joined on the Republican ticket by his newly announced running mate, Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood. The pair face a significant challenge in their bid to return the governor's office to Republican control for the first time in over two decades.

President Donald Trump has endorsed Blakeman's candidacy, recording a video message that was played at the convention. "Bruce Blakeman will make New York safe and strong and honest and prosperous again," Trump said in the message. Blakeman, a longtime Trump supporter, affirmed his loyalty to the former president, stating, "When it comes to President Donald J. Trump, I will always have his back," according to news reports.

The Republican nominee outlined his campaign priorities, promising to cut income taxes for middle-class families, lower electricity bills, protect Second Amendment rights, and continue his controversial effort to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls' sports.

However, recent polling suggests Blakeman faces an uphill battle. A Siena College poll released Tuesday shows Hochul with a commanding lead of 54% to 28% over Blakeman. The poll also highlighted Hochul's increasing support among Democrats and improved favorability ratings statewide, with 49% of voters now viewing her favorably – the highest rating in her four and a half years as governor.

"Ten months from election day, Blakeman — largely unknown to three in five New York voters — has his work cut out for him," said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. "Hochul's 79-8% lead among Democrats is significantly better than Blakeman's 69-15% lead with Republicans, and she leads 41-34% with independents, as well as in every region of the state," according to the poll.

Republicans at the convention also nominated Saritha Komatireddy, a federal prosecutor, to challenge incumbent Democratic Attorney General Letitia James, and Joseph Hernandez as the GOP candidate for state Comptroller against incumbent Democrat Tom DiNapoli.

With Democrats outnumbering Republicans two-to-one in New York State, committee members have indicated that independent voters will be a key focus in this election, as they represent the state's fastest-growing voter bloc.
