The Catskill Mountain Railroad experienced a significant increase in ridership in 2024, with over 60,000 passengers, marking a 17.5% rise from the previous year. The railroad, based in Kingston, New York, offers various themed rides, including the popular Polar Express, which alone attracted 34,172 riders, an 8.2% increase from 2023.
The economic impact of the railroad is substantial, contributing approximately $8 million annually to Ulster County businesses. In 2024, 85.7% of the passengers came from outside Ulster County, primarily from downstate New York and New Jersey.
The railroad's growth is supported by recent developments, including a long-term lease for a future terminal at Basin Road and $4.5 million in grants from the State Transportation Department for track extension, a new yard, and new equipment. Additionally, the Ulster County Legislature formed the U&D Corridor Committee to enhance the area by building a trail alongside the tracks from Kingston to the Ashokan Reservoir.
According to the Daily Freeman, the railroad saw increases across all its rides, including the Easter Bunny Express and Catskill Summer Flyer.
Mid Hudson News reported that the railroad's future plans include a trail alongside the tracks, enhancing the tourist attraction's appeal.
