The newly renovated Henry W. DuBois Bike Path in New Paltz remains closed despite appearing complete. Town officials have placed barricades at every cross-street along the path, warning that anyone using it does so at their own risk. The closure stems from unresolved design issues, including accessibility for maintenance equipment and drainage concerns.

The path, which cost over four million dollars, is intended to connect the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail, creating over 30 miles of off-road cycling and hiking routes. However, the town has yet to accept the path due to these issues.

According to the Town of New Paltz, the path's completion is crucial for ensuring safety and accessibility. The project faced delays in 2022 and 2023, but construction resumed in May 2024. The New York State Department of Transportation and Whispering Pines Development Corporation are overseeing the project, funded primarily by a Federal Highway Administration grant.

Despite the setbacks, New Paltz Town Supervisor Amanda Gotto remains optimistic about the path's potential benefits. She believes it will provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging healthy lifestyles and reducing traffic congestion. The town aims to resolve the issues and open the path soon, ensuring it meets all safety standards before taking responsibility for its maintenance.
