For the sixth consecutive year, New York lawmakers have missed the deadline to pass an on-time state budget. Negotiations are still ongoing at the State Capitol in Albany, with no deal in sight. On Tuesday (April 1), lawmakers approved a budget extender to ensure the state can pay its bills through Thursday (April 3).
The delay in reaching a budget agreement is due to stalled negotiations over several contentious issues. According to Capitol Confidential, these include changes to pretrial discovery laws, involuntary commitment standards, and restrictions on cellphone use in schools. Lawmakers anticipate that another extender may be necessary as talks continue without any written compromises.
While late budgets are not uncommon in New York, the current uncertainty is affecting schools and local governments that are waiting for funding details. Governor Kathy Hochul remains committed to achieving her broader policy goals, even if it requires additional time to finalize the spending plan.
