The investigation into the recent strike on the Hudson Athens Lighthouse continues as authorities search for the vessel responsible for the damage. The incident, described as a hit-and-run, occurred between Tuesday (April 29) and Wednesday (April 30), according to the Greene County Sheriff's Office. The unknown vessel collided with the left side of the main dock, causing approximately $250,000 in damage.
The Ulster County Sheriff's Office is employing sonar equipment to determine if the vessel was damaged enough to sink. The impact destroyed the dock and stairs leading to the lighthouse, but the lighthouse's granite base remains intact. The damage has delayed ongoing roof repair work, as there is currently no dock for boats to deliver materials.
The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, built in the 1870s, is on the National Register of Historic Places and was already in danger of collapsing into the Hudson River. The preservation project for the lighthouse is now in the design phase, but the recent incident has complicated efforts to save it.
Van Calhoun, chair of the Restoration Committee, stated that the vessel involved must have been heavy to cause such extensive damage. The Greene County Sheriff's Office urges anyone with information to contact them at 518-943-3300, Ext. 509.
