Brian Tate, a 50-year-old resident of High Falls is under investigation by the FBI for allegedly making online threats against former President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Tate, who used the alias "James Tate" on social media, reportedly posted messages mentioning a .270 caliber rifle and suggested violent intentions towards Trump and Musk.
The FBI, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service, conducted a search of Tate's residence, looking for illegal firearms and digital evidence related to the threats. According to Hudson Valley Post, Tate's posts included statements about using a .270 rifle from 300 yards. He allegedly made these threats in response to Musk's comments on Social Security, declaring "war" on Musk.
Tate, who has a previous conviction for the criminal sale of marijuana, admitted to posting the messages but claimed he did not possess a firearm and had no intention of causing harm. He attributed his online behavior to stress from his children and alcohol consumption, as noted in court documents.
The investigation highlights the serious nature of online threats, especially those involving public figures. While no charges have been filed yet, the case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing digital threats and ensuring public safety.
