Police Fatally Shoot Sword-Wielding Man in Poughkeepsie

In the Town of Poughkeepsie, a man armed with a sword was fatally shot by police on Thursday (June 5). The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Fair Oaks Drive when officers responded to a report of an assault. Upon arrival, they found a man attacking members of the Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team with a sword.

Inside the home, officers discovered two men, one of whom had sustained a head injury. During the confrontation with the sword-wielding suspect, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the man. Despite receiving immediate first aid, the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital, as reported by Times Union.

The identity of the suspect has not been released. The New York State Attorney General's Office, along with the New York State Police, is investigating the incident, as required by state law when civilians are killed during police encounters. News10 reports that anyone with information is urged to contact the Attorney General’s Office.
