A disoriented bear cub found wandering on Samsonville Road in the Town of Rochester, New York, is now receiving care at the Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation center. The Ulster County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call late Wednesday (June 18) night, where Deputy Dave Stoutenburgh discovered the cub sitting in the middle of the road. Unable to locate its mother, the deputy took the cub to safety.
The cub, possibly injured by a car, was lethargic and unable to walk when found. According to News10, rehabilitator Tyffani Haines received a call from Deputy Stoutenburgh around 11:30 p.m. and quickly took action. She kept the cub in a dog crate overnight and provided it with water. By morning, the cub was more lively, and arrangements were made to transfer it to Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center in Hunter for further care.
The Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation center, which initially took in the cub, can only hold large animals for 48 hours due to their Department of Environmental Conservation license limitations. President Tonya Frickey expressed interest in expanding their services to accommodate larger wildlife, including deer, moose, and bears, but noted the need for more land and resources.
The rescue has sparked enthusiasm among the rehabilitators, with Haines describing the experience as exhilarating. The cub's journey to recovery continues under the care of Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center, where it joins other rescued cubs.
