Representative Mike Lawler, who serves New York's 17th Congressional District, has announced a town hall meeting scheduled for Saturday (June 28) at John Jay Senior High School in Hopewell Junction, Dutchess County. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m., and attendees must register online to secure a spot.
This town hall is the fourth and final in a series of public forums that Lawler has conducted across his district since April. Previous events have taken place in Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam counties. According to The Highlands Current, additional security measures will be in place due to past threats against the congressman and his staff. Attendees may be asked to provide proof of residency, and certain items, such as bags and signs, will not be allowed.
The town hall comes amid heightened political tensions, with previous sessions drawing large crowds and featuring intense exchanges over issues like Medicaid changes and deportations. As reported by Yahoo News, Lawler's positions have sparked both jeers and applause from constituents.
Lawler, a Republican, is considering a gubernatorial run in 2026, a decision he is expected to announce soon. His seat is considered a critical swing seat, with seven Democratic contenders already eyeing the 2026 race.
