Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has allocated $35,000 in county funds to provide free window air conditioning units to eligible residents. This decision comes after the depletion of the state's Cooling Assistance Program funding. The initiative aims to help older adults and medically vulnerable individuals who cannot afford air conditioning during the hot summer months.
Serino emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, "Far too many older adults quietly tough out these hot summer days without air conditioning because they simply can’t afford it – and now with the state’s program out of funds, their options are even more limited." She added that the additional funding would help protect the health of seniors and vulnerable neighbors, ensuring no one is left behind during dangerous heat.
Applications for the county aid will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the funds are exhausted. Residents can find more information on the program by visiting Dutchessny.gov/aging or by calling 845-486-2555.
