Due to ongoing dry weather, a burn ban is now in effect in Cairo. The ban, announced by the Cairo Town Supervisor, applies to the Cairo Fire District and the Round Top Fire District. It prohibits all outdoor fires until further notice to prevent potential wildfires.
According to the Town of Cairo, the decision was made in response to heightened fire danger in the area. Local officials stress that the risk of fires spreading rapidly is high, particularly in the designated fire districts.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) emphasizes that open burning is a leading cause of wildfires in the state. Residents are advised to check fire danger levels before planning any outdoor fires and to adhere to local regulations, which may be stricter than state rules. The DEC notes that burning trash is illegal statewide and advises against open fires unless they meet specific criteria, such as being on agricultural land larger than five acres.
The burn ban will remain in place until conditions improve and officials deem it safe to lift the restrictions. Residents are urged to stay informed through local announcements and to report any wildfires to the authorities immediately.
