An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a New Windsor resident, following a shooting incident on Wednesday (April 8). Officers responded to a shots fired call at a home on Hawthorne Way, where they found 57-year-old Larome Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by emergency services, Johnson was pronounced dead at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.
The suspect, 47-year-old Thomas Crews, was taken into custody at the scene. Police have charged Crews with second-degree murder, a felony. He was arraigned at his hospital bedside while being treated for a possible heart attack and is currently held without bail in the Orange County Jail. The shooting is believed to have resulted from a long-standing dispute between the two neighbors at The Grove townhouse complex.
According to Hudson Valley News 12, New Windsor police confirmed they had previously responded to a neighbor dispute involving the two men about three years ago, although details of the incidents remain undisclosed.
As the community mourns, a GoFundMe has been created to support Johnson's family, describing him as "a retired, well-respected correction officer" and "a loving husband, father, son, brother, and amazing friend to all who knew and loved him." The fundraiser has already raised thousands of dollars to help cover funeral and related expenses.
