Ulster County, New York, will see a temporary gas tax holiday this summer. The county legislature voted 21-2 on Tuesday (April 21) to waive the 4% sales tax on gas and diesel prices above $3 per gallon from June 1 through August 31. This move aims to provide financial relief to motorists during the summer travel season.

The current average gas price in Ulster County is $4.01 per gallon, according to Daily Freeman. Legislator Laura Donovan, who introduced the measure, stated that the waiver could result in a combined savings of $725,000 for county motorists. However, some lawmakers, like Abe Uchitelle, expressed concerns about whether the savings would be passed on to consumers.

The gas tax holiday comes amid rising fuel prices, attributed in part to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Minority Leader Kevin Roberts and Legislator Richard Walls cited the geopolitical situation as a factor in the price hikes. Meanwhile, Majority Leader Uchitelle criticized President Donald Trump's handling of the situation, arguing that it has damaged international relations.

The measure is similar to recent actions taken in Dutchess and Putnam counties. In Dutchess County, the waiver will last for six months, as reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal. Despite the expected relief, some lawmakers, like Legislator Megan Sperry, have labeled the measure a "short-sighted band-aid."

The Ulster County Ways and Means Committee will monitor the implementation of the tax cap to ensure that the benefits reach consumers. The measure will be forwarded for further consideration, and legislators hope to see a positive impact on the community during the summer months.
