Leaders in the Hudson Valley are voicing their concerns after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published and then removed a list of "sanctuary" jurisdictions, which included several local counties and cities. The list, intended to highlight areas allegedly obstructing federal immigration enforcement, drew sharp criticism from local officials and the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins stated that the county has never identified as a "sanctuary county" and fully complies with federal law. He criticized the federal government for using the term as a political tool to instill fear. Similarly, Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger and Kingston Mayor Steve Noble assured residents of their compliance with federal laws, expressing confusion over their inclusion on the list. They emphasized their commitment to public safety and upholding constitutional rights.

The Columbia County Sanctuary Movement viewed the list as a "badge of honor" and stated they would not be intimidated. Meanwhile, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus and other county leaders, including those from Dutchess, Putnam, and Rockland, were also surprised by their inclusion and are seeking clarification from federal authorities.

The list's removal followed widespread backlash and claims of inaccuracies, with many officials, including Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek, asserting that their counties do not fit the sanctuary label. The DHS has yet to provide clear criteria for the list's compilation, leading to further confusion and calls for rectification.

In response to inquiries, a DHS representative reiterated that the list is under constant review and subject to change. Despite the controversy, several municipalities, such as Kingston and Newburgh, have self-identified as sanctuary cities, supporting policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
