Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs recognized U.S. Navy Airman Apprentice Donald Herring, Sr., a former resident of Poughkeepsie, as the 'Honor-A-Veteran' recipient during a ceremony on Thursday (September 18) at VFW Post 170 in Poughkeepsie. The monthly ceremony pays tribute to deceased local veterans for their military service and contributions to the community.

Donald Herring, Sr., born on March 21, 1955, in Poughkeepsie, enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served as a 632 Ordnance Mechanic and E2 Airman Apprentice with the VF-31 “Tomcatters” Fighter Squadron at Naval Air Station Oceana during the Vietnam War. His distinguished service earned him several honors, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.

After being honorably discharged in June 1973, Herring returned to Poughkeepsie, where he became a vital part of the community. Known for his mechanical skills and kindness, he was a devoted family man with four children and 17 grandchildren. He found joy in music, especially the oldies from the 1950s and 60s, which often played in his garage while he worked.

According to the Mid Hudson News, County Executive Serino stated, "Donny Herring was so much more than a decorated veteran. He was a devoted father, a gifted mechanic, and a quiet force of kindness in his community."

Airman Apprentice Herring passed away on November 23, 2019. During the ceremony, his family received several honors, including the New York State Senate Liberty Medal, recognizing his life of service and sacrifice.

The 'Honor-A-Veteran' ceremonies, held from April through November, continue to celebrate the lives of local veterans. The next ceremony is scheduled for October 16 in Poughkeepsie. Families and friends can nominate veterans for recognition by contacting the Dutchess County Office of Veterans Affairs.
