Are these animals creating a “time share?"
Sometimes nature creates strange bedfellows, and this one has researchers scratching their heads. They found that a group of hyenas, warthogs and porcupines all decided to live together. It happened on a wildlife preserve in Kenya. Cameras revealed seven hyenas, three warthogs and two porcupines resided in one of the dens, while the other had 11 hyenas, six warthogs and two porcupines as residents. Separate chambers inside the dens allowed the creatures to keep some distance from one another, meaning they were more neighbors than roommates. But that’s amazing, considering they typically fight over food, if not attack each other. They were also active at different times of the day or night, meaning they aren’t always home at the same time. So it’s more like a time share! Experts say a dry season made it tough to dig burrows, so sharing space was nature’s solution.
